The two had an unusual relationship with one another, in that McCandless left her boyfriend Jason Mengel for Woodworth, who was a barista at a local coffee shop that she and Mengel frequented. But eventually, McCandless wanted to get back together with Mengel, and figured she would look more sympathetic if she was a victim to Woodworth attacking her. So she violently killed him and staged the whole thing.
