Alex Bovaird is the costume designer of the hit HBO show The White Lotus. Bovaird has been with the show since season 1 and has garnered acclaim for her fresh, evocative, and stylish costumes. Danessa Myricks, founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty, started out her career in nursing before parlaying a chance meeting with a media executive into a job at a hair-and-beauty magazine publisher. When the magazine she worked for abruptly closed, she pivoted again, teaching herself to be a makeup artist. She built up her experience and expertise and, within a few years, was an in-demand artist teaching at trade shows and selling DVDs of her master classes. She then went on to work at Kiss and Benefit, where she led product development and innovation on projects such as Benefit’s brow collection. In 2015, she launched her eponymous brand, which made a splash in the beauty world with its imaginative, multiuse products. The brand launched in Sephora in 2021 and has seen huge year-on-year growth, all while creating entirely new formulas and offering programs like the Danessa Myricks Angels, which provides mentorship opportunities to up-and-coming artists.

Aliabadi immigrated to the United States as a teenager after the Iranian Revolution. She worked quickly to learn English to continue her education, eventually receiving a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor of medicine degree. After finishing her OBGYN training, she worked 24-hour hospital shifts and got a job covering five clinics across Los Angeles. In 2005, she opened her private practice in Beverly Hills. Word soon spread about her incredible care, and women flocked to her practice in droves (including celebrities like SZA and Halsey!). In the 2010s, her star began to rise when she appeared on shows like The Doctors and Dr. Phil, where she provided medical advice and support. Last year, she started a podcast, SheMD, where she provides education on women’s health issues like infertility and endometriosis. Her platform also grew when the actress Olivia Munn credited Aliabadi with saving her life after testing revealed she had early stage breast cancer. Most recently, she launched Ovii, a supplement designed for women with PCOS, to further support the estimated 15% of American women who struggle with the condition.

Emily Oberg is the co-founder of the popular lifestyle and activewear brand Sporty & Rich. She got her start in fashion at Complex, where she founded an Instagram page to curate all of the vintage images that inspired her. The page became immensely popular, as it captured a sense of glamor and nostalgia long before anyone was talking about the term “quiet luxury.” In 2018, she began selling Sporty & Rich merchandise, and over the last seven years, has grown the company into a full-fledged brand with core collections of vintage-yet-modern looks and collaborations with brands like Solid & Striped, Adidas, and Le Bristol Paris. In this episode, Oberg joins Associate Features Editor Ana Escalante to talk about how she built the brand from her apartment to a flagship store in SoHo.
