Cork Protesters Face Arrest If Protest Goes Ahead, But Is It Their Right?

5 March 2021 - 8 mins
Podcast Series The Last Word with Matt Cooper

Gardaí have warned organisers of a planned anti-lockdown protest in Cork city tomorrow that they could face a criminal investigation if it goes ahead.

After last weekend's scenes in Dublin, there are concerns that the event in Cork could be hijacked by those intent on violence.

But is it okay for public health guidelines to infringe on people's right to protest? Is there a way to ensure that protests can go ahead safely?

Senator Jerry Buttimer from Cork South-Central and journalist Larissa Nolan joined us to give their thoughts.
