The Story of Charlie Gallagher - the GAA's lost icon

The Story of Charlie Gallagher - the GAA's lost icon

On OTB AM, we're bringing you 'Charlie - the story of Charlie Gallagher, the GAA's lost icon' - a fantastic new sportsbook, written by Paul Fitzpatrick. Paul joined Tommy Rooney in studio for a chat about the life and times of a legendary footballer that you've probably never heard of. It's a complicated story, woven around the Troubles and the societal changes in Ulster post WW2, and how they impacted on Gaelic Games in Ireland. There was this wonderful mystique around Charlie Gallagher, and his ability with a Football - talk of his talents spread throughout Ireland, with nothing more than word of mouth. Should the lack of an All-Ireland medal impact on his legacy? Charlie's career coincided with the first real drought in Cavan football history! Sadly Charlie Gallagher, failed to deal with the sense of loss he felt after retirement. He never really developed behind the superstar on the pitch - alcoholism and the harsh realities of life in Derry in the 70s caught up with him too. Described as a 'lost icon', the story of Charlie Gallagher has been brought back to life by family, teammates and worshippers alike, enjoy! Paul Clarke on a life around Dublin Football | OTB AM

Paul Clarke on a life around Dublin Football | OTB AM

It's 35 years since Paul Clarke captained the Dublin minors to an All-Ireland title in 1984. Since then he's been involved in the good days, and some bad - but he's always been there for Dublin GAA. The Whitehall Colmcille man joined Adrian and Tommy on OTB AM - to discuss a life around Dublin Football. Serving as a selector under Paul 'Pillar' Caffrey for four years from 2005-2008, Paul Clarke thought his time with the county footballers had come and gone. Then the request, from Jim Gavin, to stand in as interim manager for the O'Byrne Cup campaign arrived in 2017, before joining as coach in 2018. In this 45-minute chat, Clarke expands on his role, the current crop, and the influences on his time as a Dublin footballer. We also chat about some of the standout moments from the five in-a-row and life outside the wire! Be sure to tune in to #OTBAM every morning from 7:30 am - or you can get in touch with the show over at twitter [@offtheball] On Friday morning, Adrian Barry and Andy Dunne are guiding us through the reaction to Ireland Russia. Adrian sits down with Simon Zebo and Alan Quinlan checks-in from Japan. We're also talking Premier League with Phil Thompson, and talking to Eoin in Kobe.
