Nutritionist Calls High Sugar Content In Subway Bread 'Surprising'
30 September 2020 - 9 minsIt's rare that sandwiches end up being discussed in the courtroom, unless it's about lunch, but this week The Supreme Court made a very interesting decision in relation to the bread used in the famous Subway sandwiches.
And it all comes down to VAT.
Galway-based Bookfinders Ltd, a Subway franchisee, argued that it was not liable for VAT on some of its products including their famous sandwiches.
The argument stemmed from a definition of bread as a stable food which ensures its zero-VAT status. However, the court has ruled that because the bread used in the sandwiches has a sugar content of over 10% of the weight of the flour included in the dough, this would not be the case.
